Edmund Connolly was born in London, England and raised in the Oxfordshire countryside. He studied Music at Robinson College, Cambridge, where he was Organ Scholar. On graduating he joined the choir of St John’s College, Cambridge as a lay clerk. During his time at Cambridge he toured to Italy, Northern Ireland, Japan, Sweden, and Hong Kong, as well as performing at venues including Ely Cathedral and the world-famous Wigmore Hall in London. Edmund then earned his Master of Music degree at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama in the City of London where he studied voice under Professor David Pollard. in 2004, a year after he graduated, Edmund was appointed a professor of music studies at the Guildhall School, a position he held until 2011.
Edmund Connolly’s diverse career in the UK encompassed extensive professional experience as an opera and concert singer, organist, piano accompanist and conductor, in addition to his work as a voice teacher and vocal coach to young professional singers. His students included young singers preparing roles for companies such as Glyndebourne Festival Opera, English National Opera and the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, as well as advanced students from the Guildhall School, the Royal Academy of Music and the Trinity Laban Conservatoire.
A lyric baritone, Edmund has sung major operatic roles in the UK and abroad. He has also sung a wide variety of oratorio repertoire as a soloist in the UK and the US. As oratorio soloist, he has worked with conductors including Bob Chilcott, David Hill, Dante Anzolini and Sir David Willcocks, and he has also worked as rehearsal accompanist and continuo organist for Sir John Eliot Gardiner. Edmund has been a frequent deputy with Britain’s only full-time professional chamber choir, the BBC Singers, and has sung throughout Europe with groups including English Voices, The Choir of London and the Gabrieli Consort.
Edmund is an active, versatile recitalist with a particular love for English art song. He and his wife, organist and pianist Maxine Thévenot, are the voice and piano/organ duo Air & Hammers, and together perform recitals in diverse venues across the US and in the UK.
Edmund’s experience also embraces opera education work. He has led opera and singing workshops in elementary and high schools for both English Touring Opera and English Pocket Opera, as well as performing in and musically directing two new operas, specially commissioned by ETO, which toured around England to rural, suburban and inner-city schools.
From 2004-2012 Edmund Connolly was Organist and Music Director at Rosslyn Hill Chapel in Hampstead, North London, where he accompanied services and directed regular performances by the Chapel Choir, including works by Vivaldi and Puccini and the Requiems of Mozart, Fauré and Rutter, alongside more traditional church repertoire. As a choral director, Edmund has conducted and trained groups ranging from children’s choirs such as the New London Children’s Choir Barbershop Group, through adult amateur groups such as the North London Chorus, to the professional Antiphon Chamber Choir.
Appointed in 2013 to the role of Upper School Chorus Director at Albuquerque Academy, Edmund also maintains a private voice studio. He is an active member of the National Association of Teachers of Singing, the American Choral Directors Association, the National Association for Music Education and the American Guild of Organists. Edmund maintains a research interest in vocal health and development, especially voice change in boys and the challenges of keeping boys healthily involved in singing through their teen years, and has written on this subject for the Journal of the Association of Anglican Musicians.
At the Cathedral of St. John, Edmund is responsible for accompanying the Cathedral Choir and Choristers at all services and directing both the Cathedral Cherubs (children ages 3-7) and the Cathedral Chorale, a non-auditioned group for singers of all ages and abilities.
