Cathedral Music 2010-2011 • 17th Season
Welcome to a new season of Friends of Cathedral Music!
Over the past seventeen years the Cathedral has renewed and strengthened its commitment to the liturgical and musical life of our area. Our choir program is central to the life of the Cathedral, and is one of the principal focuses of our energies. The Cathedral Choirs sing a wide variety of music which includes the finest of American, Continental and English anthems and service music of all eras. Our concert series this year continues many traditions from the past, along with continuing efforts to broaden the horizons of the musical scene here in New Mexico. We view our work as an essential part of the life of the Cathedral, as well as a ministry to the wider community. Our series this year includes a joint fundraiser event with the Cathedral Outreach Center which will benefit Barrett House—a women and children’s shelter in Albuquerque.
Our musical offerings for the year include:
• A world-class organ and choral concert series featuring internationally renowned American organists Douglas Cleveland, Dorothy Papadakos, and Stephen Tharp; several internationally renowned American soloists including former Chanticleer’s soprano extraordinaire—Eric Brenner, NYC’s countertenor—Robert Isaacs, Canada’s tenor—Lenard Whiting and Colorado-based bass—David Farwig; two performances by New Mexico’s only resident all-professional vocal ensemble, Polyphony: Voices of New Mexico; and two performances featuring our own Cathedral Choirs with organ and with orchestra.
• Choral Evensong, a musical and artistic treasure of the Anglican Choral tradition, is usually sung on the first Sunday of each month. This year’s Evensongs will feature some of the music the Cathedral Choirs sang on their most recent tour of England in August 2010. New this season is the addition of a half-hour organ recital beginning at 3:30pm to the Sundays that we have Evensong.
• The Cathedral Commissions program will wrap up the FCM series and the liturgical choral season in mid-June with a weekend of three brand new commissioned works by the distinguished Canadian composer, Andrew Ager. These works include an organ concerto, a solo organ work, and a work for the Cathedral Choir and organ. The composer will be present for this weekend of new music.
• Magnificent choral music at the weekly Sunday 9:00am and 11:00am sung Eucharists.
How can you help?
• Make a contribution to Friends of Cathedral Music. Without this income, we would be forced to limit our musical offerings to Sunday mornings. • Attend our choral services, recitals, and concerts, and tell your friends about our Friends of Cathedral Music series. This is the greatest possible encouragement to our efforts.
• Continue to encourage applications for membership in the Cathedral Choir and the Cathedral Chorister program. We must always continue to recruit new young boy and girl choristers, since they continue to grow up and graduate from the choirs. Interested parents should call the Cathedral at (505) 247-1581 ext. 106.
