From the Clergy – January 19, 2020

From the Very Rev. Kristi Maulden Image of Jesus as the Lamb of God This Sunday’s lectionary includes a passage from the Gospel of John.  In it, John the Baptizer sees Jesus, points him out to his own disciples, and proclaims, “Look, the Lamb of God who takes away the...

Warden’s Column – January 19, 2020

The Cathedral welcomes Bishop Michael Buerkel Hunn and other guests to two exciting events this weekend – The Celebration of a New Ministry as the Very Reverend Kristina Maulden is officially instituted as Dean of the Cathedral of St. John on Saturday and the bishop’s...

From the Clergy – January 12, 2020

From the Very Rev. Kristi Maulden Baptism of our Lord This Sunday is the Feast Day celebrating the Baptism of our Lord Jesus.  We will hear the Gospel account of the encounter between Jesus and John at the Jordan river.  This is Matthew’s description of the event and...

Warden’s Column – January 12, 2020

A financial milestone for St. John’s Cathedral was achieved in 2019. For the first time in decades, we ended the year without a draw from our investment funds to support the operating budget. You read that right – zero draw. Let’s reflect on how far we have come. Ten...

From the Clergy – December 22, 2019

From the Very Rev. Kristi Maulden Almost Christmas It is amazing the amount of pressure we put on ourselves at this time of year. I know some people maintain their sanity and calm. But there are many more of us who run ourselves ragged trying to make Christmas perfect...

Warden’s Column – December 22, 2019

The candle we light on the Fourth Sunday of Advent symbolizes Love. What a curious word is “Love”. We use it in so many ways that it sometimes loses the depth of the feeling it represents. For instance, I say, “I love chocolate” and “I love the landscapes of New...

From the Clergy – December 15, 2019

From the Rev. Chuck Jones “Are any among you sick? They should call for the elders of the church and have them pray over them, anointing them with oil in the name of the Lord.”   James 5:14 In my sermons, I find myself most always focusing on preaching about the...

Warden’s Column – December 15, 2019

I always enjoy Gaudete, the third Sunday in Advent. From Ecclesiastical Latin, gaudete means “rejoice (ye).”  In the Advent wreath, Gaudete is represented by lighting a pink candle, as pink is a liturgical color for joy. Indeed, there is much joy as we anticipate the...
